ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COPYRIGHT INFORMATION

There are many ways to evaluate sources.  We recommend the CRAAP test.  Make sure it is current, acurate, and reliable.

What is the best way to evaluate information?
What is copyright?

It is a law that gives you ownership of anything you create.  You are protected by law.  No one can use or produce your work unless you give them permission.

What is fair use?

Because you are a student, and you are using information for educational purposes, you are able to use copyrighted information legally. This is called Fair Use. However, there are some limitations

  • Do not get all of your information from one source. Use a variety of resources.

  • The less information you take from the source, the better.

  • Facts are not copyrighted, but the way they are presented are. Be careful!

  • Music and images are copyrighted as well as text. As a general rule, you may only use 10% of the copyrighted text or music under fair use. Use images from sites such as Flickr or FreeImages or obtain an image from the public domain.
